Abstract

The IBM 3900 family of Advanced Function Printers offers a broad range of  highly reliable, continuous-form simplex and duplex page printing solutions at  throughput speeds ranging from 91 to 708 impressions per minute, very high print  quality, and a rich assortment of performance and productivity enhancement features and functions. The 3900 models offer simplex and duplex printing with paper widths up to 18 inches. The IBM 3900-001 and "base" IBM 3900-0W1 offer high-speed simplex production printing at throughput speeds up to 354 impressions per minute (IPM) with a 16-inch and 18-inch paper path,  respectively. By ordering the 3900-0W1 with feature code 4290 (plant) or 4291  (field MES), the throughput speed is increased up to 310 IPM in 1-up format or  480 IPM in 2-up 8.5 x 11-inch side-by-side format. The IBM 3900-0W3 offers an 18-inch paper path with simplex printing at 232 IPM, and is upgradable to the  faster IBM 3900-0W1. The IBM 3900 Advanced Function Duplex Printing System is  comprised of the 3900-D01 and 3900-D02 and produces duplex output at throughput speeds of up to 300 IPM. The 3900 Duplex System can also be operated in dual simplex mode with the models D01 and D02 each printing up to 150 IPM simplex output (229 IPM with features #4241 and #4242 installed). Models D01 and D02 support paper-path widths up to 16 inches. The IBM 3900 Advanced Function Wide  Duplex Printing System is comprised of the 3900-DW1 and 3900-DW2 and produces duplex output at throughput speeds of up to 708 IPM when printing 2-up 8.5 x 11-inches side-by-side impressions with the optional high-speed duplex features. The 3900 Wide Duplex System can also be operated in dual simplex mode with the models DW1 and DW2 each printing up to 354 IPM simplex output with either the optional 150-229 Dual Simplex Mode features or the high-speed duplex features  installed. Models DW1 and DW2 support paper-path widths up to 18 inches. The  addition of InfoPrint 4000 - 464/600 High Resolution Duplex Models DR1 and DR2 offers high-quality, on-demand duplex printing at a high resolution of 600 dots per inch (DPI). The DR1 and DR2 work in tandem to produce duplex output at 300 IPM in 1-up letter format and up to 464 IPM in 2-up 8.5 x 11-inch side-by-side format.

Model Abstract 3900-001

The Model 001 is a high-speed, continuous-form page printer that operates at speeds up to 229 impressions-per-minute (IPM) for 8.5" x 11" paper or 235 IPM for ISO A4 paper. It has a 16-inch paper path with a 15-inch print width. This  Advanced Function Printer with Enhanced Print Quality includes a new developer  system, which improves overall print quality. In addition, the  Pennant*-exclusive Print Quality Enhancement (PQE), another standard function,  enables the smoothing of edges on diagonal lines, protects the fine details in  customer applications (logo details, etc.), improves the fidelity of images (halftone gray scales), and allows for the adjustment of the boldness of text  and darkness of images. Other standard features include the Advanced Function  Image and Graphics (AFIG) feature, Increased Memory Performance, fuser preheat  platen, 4MB of memory, and the enhanced operator alert facility. The 3900-001 is  supported by IBM's AFP* software. It prints in simplex mode and accepts a rich assortment of chargeable features including pre- and post-processing interfaces.

Model Abstract 3900-0W1

The IBM 3900-0W1 offers an 18-inch paper path with a 17-inch print width offering customers the opportunity to reduce overall printing time and usage  charges by enabling the printing of 2-up side-by-side 8.5 inch by 11-inch and ISO A4 pages. The base model IBM 3900-0W1 prints 229 8.5 x 11-inch (235 ISO A4) impressions-per-minute (IPM) (8.5-inch print direction) or 354 IPM when printing 2-up side-by-side 8.5" x 11" pages (332 ISO A4). Adding special feature 4290 (plant) or 4291 (field MES) enables throughput speeds up to 310 8.5 x 11-inch IPM (318 ISO A4) when printing in the 8.5-inch print direction, or 480 IPM when  printing 2-up 8.5 x 11-inch side-by-side pages (451 ISO A4). Up to three  pre/post-processing interfaces may be attached to the IBM 3900-0W1 enabling a wide choice of pre- and post-processing devices. Managing the printer function  is IBM's state of the art Advanced Function Common Control Unit (AFCCU). The AFCCU is based on IBM's recognized RISC technology and in the standard configuration, includes 32MB memory, a touchscreen control panel/monitor, and the option of Token-Ring (TCP/IP), Ethernet (TCP/IP), ESCON*, or System/370* Parallel Channel attachment. Performance enhancements such as the Advanced Function Image and Graphics (AFIG) feature are integral to the AFCCU design.  Consequently, the AFCCU provides levels of performance meeting or exceeding those provided on other 3900s with the Decompression Performance Enhancement  (DPE) and the Increased Memory Performance features. Additionally, the AFCCU  extends the scaling performance enhancement for compressed image to all scaling  factors, enabling the printing of scaled compressed images at significantly  higher levels of performance.

The IBM 3900-0W3 Advanced Function Printer offers the customer an 18-inch  paper path with a 17-inch print width that prints at throughput speeds up to 150 IPM (8.5" x 11", 154 IPM ISO A4). The 18-inch paper path provides the capability of printing wider documents or such applications as 2-up, side-by-side 8.5-inch  x 11-inch and ISO A4 pages (increasing print speeds up to 232 IPM). Up to three pre/post-processing interfaces may be attached to the IBM 3900-0W3, enabling a wide choice of productivity-enabling, pre- and post- devices.

Standard on the IBM 3900-0W3 Advanced Function Printer, is a multi-roll  developer system for superior overall print quality as well as the Pennant-exclusive Print Quality Enhancement (PQE). PQE enables the smoothing of edges on diagonal lines, protects the fine details in the customer's applications (such as logo details, etc), improves the fidelity of images (halftone grey scales), and allows for the adjustment of the boldness of text and image darkness. Also standard on the IBM 3900-0W3 Advanced Function Printer is Pennant's Advanced Function Common Control Unit (AFCCU). The AFCCU, based on IBM's recognized RISC technology, includes 32MB memory, a touch screen control panel/monitor, and the option of ESCON*, System/370* Parallel Channel,  Token-Ring (TCP/IP), or Ethernet (TCP/IP) attachments. The IBM 3900-0W3 Advanced Function Printer may have up to two host attachments; therefore a second attachment is offered as a special feature. Additional memory is also available  as a special feature. Performance enhancements such as the Advanced Function  Image and Graphics (AFIG) feature are integral to the AFCCU design. One of the  key features of the IBM 3900-0W3 Advanced Function Printer is its upgradability to the 354 IPM 3900-0W1 should the customer's printing capacity or critical printing window requirements increase.

With the 458 IPM feature or the 150-229 Dual Simplex Speed Switch feature the throughput speeds are increased up to 354 IPM. The 3900-DW1  operates with the 3900-DW2 to produce the tandem print engine 3900 Advanced Function Wide Duplex Print System. The IBM 3900 Wide Duplex Printing System offers the customer an 18-inch paper path (with a 17-inch print width) with  duplex capabilities. This gives the customer the opportunity to reduce overall  printing time and usage charges by enabling the printing of 2-up, side-by-side 8.5 by 11 inch and ISO A4 pages. When printing in simplex mode, either or both printers may print independent data streams of simplex output at the simplex throughput speed for 1-up and 2-up formats. Model DW1 utilizes a multi-roll developer system that produces superior overall print quality. In addition, the IBM exclusive Print Quality Enhancement (PQE), another standard function, enables the smoothing of edges on diagonal lines, protects the fine details in the customer's applications (such as logo details, etc.), improves the fidelity  of images (halftone gray scales), and allows for the adjustment of the boldness of text and darkness of images. Up to three Pre/post-processing Interfaces may be attached per engine.

The 3900-DW1 does not have an AFCCU, but does have a Printer Utility Module  (PUM) that includes a Mechanism Interface Card (MIC). The MIC communicates with  the AFCCU and supports attachment of the pre/post processing interfaces.

The IBM 3900 InfoPrint 4000 - 464/600 High Resolution Duplex Printing System Model DR1 is designed to address the printing requirements for the emerging  Print-On-Demand (POD) marketplace. This high-speed, high-capacity, high  resolution, duplex printing system with excellent print quality allows you to print traditional publishing documents in Just-In-Time manufacturing environments. The IBM 3900 High Resolution Duplex Printing System provides cost  effective, short-run production of documents when and where you need them, in the right quantity for the particular immediate need. No inventory, efficient softcopy revisions, and reduced waste due to obsolescence are just a few of the  benefits. The print quality of 600 dots per inch (DPI) is an improvement over  the 240 DPI capability of other models in the 3900 printer family. This is a duplex-only printer with a speed of 300 IPM during 1-up letter printing and can run as fast as 464 IPM during 2-up side-by-side letter printing. The 3900-DR1 does not have an AFCCU, but does have a Printer Utility Module (PUM). The PUM  connects to the AFCCU on the second print engine (3900-DR2) and supports up to  three pre/post- processing interfaces.

Model Highlights 3900-D01

    The 3900-D01 does not have an Advanced Function Common Control Unit  (AFCCU). The control unit for the Advanced Function Duplex Printing System is attached to the 3900-D02. The AFCCU controls both the D01 and D02.

   * D01 and D02 operate in tandem to print duplex output.
     When operating in tandem, D01 and D02 produce duplexed
     output at throughput speeds up to 300 IPM (308 ISO A4).
     With features #4241 and #4242 installed, dual simplex print
     speed is 229 IPM per engine.

     output at throughput speeds up to 464 IPM (236 ISO A4)

Model Conversions

The IBM 3900-001 can be converted to a 3900-D01 engine by ordering the chargeable MES. In addition, a second print engine and buffer/flipper device, a new AFCCU with touchscreen control panel display, and a modified front cover assembly are required to complete the upgrade package.

The IBM 3900-0W1 can be converted to a 3900-DW1 engine by ordering the chargeable MES. A second engine (3900-DW2), buffer/flipper, and additional hardware are required to enable the printing of the second side. In addition,  two installed 3900-0W1s may be converted to a 3900-DW1 and 3900-DW2 by ordering  the chargeable MES. A buffer/flipper, AFCCU, and additional hardware are  required to enable the printing of the second side. Parts removed as a result of the conversion become the property of IBM.

The IBM 3900-0W3 is field upgradable to the 3900-0W1.

Currently installed base 3900-0W1s and 3900-DW1/DW2s can be converted to an  IBM 3900 High Resolution Duplex Printing System.

The IBM 3900-0W1 can be converted to an 3900-DR1 engine.

(For IBM US, No Longer Available as of June 27, 1997) A second engine  (3900-DR2), buffer/flipper and additional hardware are required to enable the printing of the second side. In addition, two installed 3900-0W1s may be converted to a 3900-DR1 and 3900-DR2. A buffer/flipper, AFCCU, and additional  hardware are required to enable the printing of the second side and 600 DPI.

The base IBM 3900 Wide Duplex Printing System (3900-DW1/DW2) can be converted  to the IBM 3900 High Resolution Duplex Printing System (3900-DR1/DR2). The AFCCU, and additional hardware are required to enable the printing of documents in 600 DPI.

Installed 3900-0W1s may be upgraded to the new InfoPrint 4000 models as  follows:
